Personality Style System
The DISC Personality Style System helps you understand the differences in
people, offers a personal review of each individual's strengths, areas for improvement, and gives you an action plan to improve relationships.
The assistance derived from the Institute for Motivational Living, Personality Style Report,
can include these benefits:
- Improve communication and relationships with family,
friends, co-workers, etc.
- Discover your personal motivators
- Better understand how to motivate others
- Find career options to best fit your personality style
- Compare yourself to historical figures and leaders
- Learn to maximize your personal strengths
- Build self-esteem
- Identify stressors
- Manage more effectively
- Reduce conflict and stress
- Improve sales
- Identify qualities and gifts
The
DISC personality system had its beginnings around 400 B.C. From
observing his patients, Hippocrates discerned certain similarities
and differences in human behavior. He then organized them into
four different behaviors. These four so-called “temperaments”
were named “Melancholic, Sanguine, Choleric, and Phlegmatic.”
These temperaments correlated with various body fluids believed
at the time to influence personality. In 1921, C.G. Jung spoke
of four "types" oriented by four psychological functions:
thinking, feeling, sensation and intuition, further dividing
these four into two tendencies—Introversion, Extroversion.
In 1958, Myers and Briggs, extended the list to sixteen personality
types actually based on the original four temperaments and Jung’s
hypotheses.
Today, there are more than 30 temperament/personality
profile systems utilizing Hippocrates’ four original behavioral
patterns or temperaments. Whether the system enlarges the various
combinations or uses other terms, theses profile systems have
their origins with Hippocrates. One contemporary system is the
DISC system. The DISC Personality System has been used throughout
the years for personal and professional development. The DISC
system of assessing personality characteristics is based on
the four temperaments of Hippocrates and upon the work of Dr.
William Marston, one of the foremost psychologists of the twentieth
century. Dr. Marston extensively studied the characteristics,
patterns and responses of thousands of individuals. He then
developed an assessment to measure these four important behavioral
factors.
To name them, he selected Dominance,
Influence, Steadiness and
Compliance, from which DISC takes its name.
From this research, Marston wrote “The Emotions of Normal
People.” Dr. Sanford Kulkin, Founder and President of
the Institute for Motivational Living as well as others have
built on Marston’s work throughout the 20th century.
As we have entered the 21st century,
DISC still remains a universal language of behavior that has
been validated in over 25 countries since Marston introduced
the model in 1928. At the Institute for Motivational Living
(IML), “DISCinsights provides a neutral language to allow the discussion of individual
behavioral differences, and it is not a ‘label’
that is placed on individuals. DISC identifies how four behavioral
factors interact and emphasizes the strengths and uniqueness
of each individual. For over twenty years, The Institute has
developed practical, strategic applications for DISC materials
for use in both business and interpersonal relationships. The
Institute emphasizes the extension of DISC beyond a simple training
or educational program into a life-changing experience.”
IML’s Personality 24 Question
Profile represents the cutting edge in the interpretation
of individual responses to the DISC profile. It provides for
a greater depth of analysis of individual responses to the DISC
profile instrument, leading to more accurate, in-depth conclusions.
In most all situations, the conclusions offered more often confirm what you will already know to be true about yourself. In addition, behavioral changes occur over time; and it is recommended that you periodically repeat the profile to confirm where you are at that point in your life. However, IML and Harvest Enterprises believe it is important
to understand that this publication is based upon those responses
entered by the subject. The profile is designed to provide accurate
and authoritative information regarding the subject matter.
It is offered to clients with the understanding the publisher
and Harvest Enterprises are not engaged in rendering professional
psychological services. If expert help is required, the advice
of a professional, competent person should be sought. Harvest
Enterprises will gladly provide referrals if needed or upon
request.
